The Southwark Project – a series of site-specfic works – ongoing
We are in the early stages of The Southwark Project (our working title). This project is working towards a number of site specific devised works in Southwark, where we are based.
The works are devised in response to a space and so each space is the starting point for a unique piece of theatre. We work as an ensemble with actors, musicians, designers and director all working collaboratively. In particular, we continue to explore the relationship between the actor and the audience. It is important to us that the audience has a very ‘hands on’ experience. Also, these spaces are not theatres and therefore, provide a very different experience for the audience. An experience we hope is more intimate, immediate and inspiring.
This project is currently being supported by the Jerwood Space in SE1, who are providing us with subsidised rehearsal space.
Currently, we are creating a piece based at The Old Operating Theatre and Herb Garret in Borough SE1.
This work has really grown out of two desires. Firstly, to work with a devising group over a period of time and a series of projects, to develop a technique unique to us. And secondly, to work in Southwark and join a community, which is rich in theatre and historical traditions.
Outreach
As part of this project we will be taking part in the STEP (Southwark Theatres Education Partnership) Festival in 2005. We are working with a group of teenagers excluded from mainstream schools on a devising project. Through a series of workshops, we will be sharing our devising skills, our approach to creating work in a new space and working to develop their ideas into a short performance piece.
